10/20 Future of the Internet

The Internet as we know it now will not be the same five years down the road. What will the internet look like at that point in time? My guess is it will be similar to a virtual world where you are represented by a virtual character. You won’t go to websites or search engines any longer to find what you want. Instead you will go to this virtual world directory and search through a navigation to find the store, product, or whatever it is you are looking for and “teleport” directly to where you want to go. If you haven’t seen the game “Second Life” yet, it depicts where I think the internet may go. Right now, that game has online stores your character can visit and buy psuedo clothing and items but I think over time, this will progress into your character being able to buy real life goods and services that can and will ship the actual products to you in the real world. This would greatly expand the user experience for any type of ecommerce business.

As of now, this is just a game but I am going to keep a very close eye on the development of this because I think it will revolutionize the Internet as we all know it today.

10/17 Optimize My Blog

Are you ever curious how to get your blog to show up better for keywords that you may want to be found for? Well it is actually quite simple on one level and intricately detailed on another. For the basic blog, all you really need to do is adjust your Permilinks options to create a static URL structure.

You will probably only want to do this if you have a new blog, otherwise you will loose all of your positions because you won’t have anything on your previous URLs because they will no longer exist. It would take you a couple months to rebound.

Once that is completed, you need to find out what keywords people use to search for what you want to be found for. Sound simple enough? Well if you don’t have keyword research software you can just try to think of how you might search for what you do. Then write a whole bunch of post using those keywords or search terms as your titles. Your blog will probably pull the title into the filename and the Page Title so it does a lot of the work for you.

Once that is accomplished, you will want to submit your stories or post to a number of locations such as digg.com and technorati. There are tons of places that you can submit to but you just have to do a little research on that one.

Well that is the quick simple explanation… I don’t want to go into too much detail at this point because I am writing a couple other posts that will contain the business blog optimization which will go into the intricately detailed approach to blog optimization.

Thanks,

10/16 Ethical Search Engine Optimization

Ethical Search Engine Optimization

What exactly is ethical search engine optimization? SEO or Search Engine Optimization has two different faces. On one side you have tricks and tactics that intentionally try to manipulate how search engines view your page or website. This is considered “black hat” search engine optimization and uses common tactics such as spamming, link farms, cloaking, redirects, and other black hat techniques. The other side or “white hat” side of SEO is dedicated to providing the easiest site structure that is well organized and attempts to create consistency between what is actually on the page and what you are telling the search engines is on the page. Determining what is black or white is similar to determining right from wrong. Once you understand SEO you can use your conscious to know whether something “feels” like you are trying to trick the search engines.. If so, you are probably in the black area if not grey.

Sometimes it’s not so clear as to whether what you are doing is black or white. We call these areas “grey hat”. Google is attempting to draw a harder line between the two in an attempt to clear as much of the grey area as possible. I expect their next Google Algorithm change will have new factors in the algorithm to try to establish a clear definition between the black hat areas and the white hat areas. I expect they will attempt to do this with new smarter logic that can distinguish between spam links and valid links. I also think that the new algorithm will attempt to remove some of the grey area by discounting the same class C IP backlinks. The reason for this is to discredit the companies that are benefiting from hundreds if not thousands of links from the same website.

It will be interesting to see what happens with this and how the upcoming changes will impact both black and white hat SEO.

10/13 SEO Organization

Is there any business that can’t benefit from search engine optimization If there is I would love to hear it.   I have tried hard to think of a business that couldn’t use my services and can’t really think of any.

To show you what I am talking about, I will take a look at the organization and storage container industry.   Do you think that a small company that sells storage containers out of a couple retail locations would need SEO?  Absolutely! http://www.spacesavers.com has done just that.  Space Savers has taken hold of the online industry and knows that people are searching for their products.

Their customers can either go to Ebay or an unreliable source to buy what they are looking for or they can go to the industry leader and purchase directly!   Search Engine optimization has allowed for their visibility in front of their target market.  This has allowed for a steady continuous growth in visitors and revenue.  By not accepting that the traditional retail revenue was all that could be captured, Space Savers has allowed their business to grow and grow.  This is just one example of what search engine optimization can do for you.
